ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Pat Surtain II has made history.

Surtain has been named Defensive Player of the Year by the Pro Football Writers of America, the PFWA announced Wednesday.

The Broncos' lockdown cornerback is the franchise's first player to earn the PFWA honor since the award's inception in 1992.

Surtain matched a career high in interceptions and posted his fourth consecutive season with double-digit passes defensed, and he changed the tenor of several games with his smothering coverage. From a 100-yard pick six against the Raiders in Week 5 to limiting top receivers throughout the season, Surtain played a crucial role on one of the league's top defenses.

In 92 coverage snaps against five AFC Pro Bowlers this season, Surtain allowed six receptions on 16 targets for 56 yards, no touchdowns, two interceptions and an 8.3 passer rating.

For his dominant 2024 campaign, Surtain has already been named an Associated Press first-team All-Pro, NFLPA Players' first-team All-Pro, Pro Bowler, PFWA All-NFL player, 101 Award AFC Defensive Player of the Year and Demaryius Thomas Team MVP.

Surtain will look to earn a clean sweep of awards when the Associated Press Defensive Player of the Year is announced at NFL Honors in February.
