DENVER — One of the top defenders in Broncos history and a current Bronco aiming to deliver his own spectacular career were both honored Wednesday by the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame.
Ring of Famer Simon Fletcher, who ranks second in franchise history in sacks, was inducted into the Hall of Fame following a dominant career. Reigning Defensive Player of the Year Pat Surtain II, meanwhile, was honored as one of the CSHOF's Pro Athletes of the Year.
Fletcher posted 97.5 career sacks across an 11-year career and helped lead the Broncos to three Super Bowl appearances in the 1980s. The 1985 second-round pick was inducted into the Broncos' Ring of Fame in 2016 and was Denver's franchise leader in sacks until 2019.
"This moment means that not only am I considered in the Ring of Fame among some of the greatest Broncos to ever play, but now it covers the entire state of Colorado," Fletcher told DenverBroncos.com. "… To be counted among [the best] statewide athletes in every single sport is quite an honor."
Mikaela Shiffrin, Larry Brown, Troy Tulowitzki, Lisa Van Goor and Bubbles Anderson were also inducted on Wednesday.
Just four years into his career, Surtain is perhaps on pace to one day offer his own induction speech at the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame. The three-time Pro Bowler and two-time first-team All-Pro turned in the best season of his career as he essentially locked down a side of the field each week for Denver's third-ranked scoring defense.
In February, Surtain became just the second player in franchise history and first cornerback since 2019 to earn AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year honors.
"It's a huge honor to be mentioned as one of the Colorado greats," Surtain told DenverBroncos.com. "… Another award to add to the trophy case. It's definitely a huge honor, for sure."
In addition to Surtain, the Nuggets' Nikola Jokić and Avalanche's Nathan MacKinnon were also honored as Pro Athletes of the Year.
