The Lead
Training camp has officially begun, and some of the highly anticipated training camp competitions are already on full display.
Inside linebacker Alex Singleton, who is entering his third season with the Broncos, looks forward to the energy and growth that several of these competitions will bring to practice.
"So much of my career, I have been that guy for a lot of it [that has been] fighting for a spot or fighting for playing time," Singleton said on Wednesday. "It's good."
Singleton is looking to build momentum coming off the 2023 season in which he totaled the most tackles by a Bronco in a single season (177) since at least 1991. As the competition ramps up, Singleton is eager to play alongside Cody Barton and Jonas Griffith, both of whom are expected to compete for the starting role.
"When they are rotating them and they're rolling, you get to play with other guys and you learn how other guys play," Singleton said. "I think it helps a lot, especially if you get to know guys. … It helps when everyone plays with everybody, because in a season you may need to do it a bit."
While the competition at linebacker may be front of mind for Singleton, he said that several other position battles will help drive the team to improve across the board.
"I think there are a lot of competitions on the team, not just in our room," Singleton said. "It makes the team better."
As Singleton is familiar with this kind of competition firsthand, he believes hard work and steady improvement can go a long way during a 17-game season. While the Broncos ramp up practice and look forward to Week 1, Singleton said he encourages his teammates to be ready for whenever their time may come.
"You tell those guys, 'You are competing every day to start Week 1, but that's not a 17-week decision,'" he said. "That's a Week 1 decision. Just keep getting better every single day and fit into the best role you can on this team and help us win football games, because that's the ultimate goal of everything."
