The Lead

The Broncos' secondary is making an impact this season — and catching the attention of writers and analysts around the league.

Cornerbacks Pat Surtain II and Riley Moss have both emerged as efficient and effective players this season, contributing to a Broncos' defense that has allowed just 146 passing yards per game, which ranks third in the NFL.

Albert Breer and Conor Orr of Sports Illustrated recently discussed Surtain's dominance so far this season on the MMQB NFL Podcast, with Breer posing the question: "Is there anybody who's better at their position than Pat Surtain is at his?"

Surtain has been matched up with the top receivers of Denver's opponents throughout the season, and he has done his job in limiting their productivity. Surtain was most recently matched up with New York's Garrett Wilson, limiting him to just 22 receiving yards on Sunday.

Breer and Orr discussed how Surtain's performance could put him in the same category as Pro Football Hall of Famer Darrelle Revis, with Breer mentioning Surtain's key contributions to the collective success of Defensive Coordinator Vance Joseph's unit this season.

"We'd be remiss if we talk about their approach and what V.J. has done there without looking at Surtain as one of the most valuable players in football," Breer said.

Cornerback Riley Moss has also had a strong start to the season, and his performance through four games landed him on ESPN’s All-Film Team. The list highlights players who are effectively doing their jobs this season and whose impact can clearly be seen on film.

"The Broncos walked into the season with an elite outside cornerback in Pat Surtain II and a great nickel corner in Ja'Quan McMillian and uncertainty at the last cornerback position," ESPN's Ben Solak wrote. "They wanted Moss to fill that spot. … Four weeks in, Moss is all they wanted and more: physical at the catch point, great as a tackler and able to find the football. He has been tested a ton by opposing quarterbacks, too, and he's answering the call."

As the Broncos' defense continues to build positive momentum this season, Surtain and Moss will look to continue to make an impact.
