ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Pat Surtain II has been recognized as the AFC's top defensive player.

Surtain was named the 101 Awards' 2024 AFC Defensive Player of the Year, The Committee of 101 announced Wednesday.

The 101 Awards dates back to 1969 and is the oldest active awards program dedicated exclusively to the NFL. The awards are selected via a voting process that polls 101 sportswriters and broadcasters who cover the NFL.

Surtain is the third player in franchise history to be named the 101 Awards' AFC Defensive Player of the Year, joining Lyle Alzado (1977) and Hall of Famer Randy Gradishar (1978). He is the first cornerback to earn the honor in either conference since Stephon Gilmore in 2019.

In addition to tying a career high in interceptions and recording double-digit pass breakups for the fourth consecutive season, Surtain ranked at or near the top in nearly every advanced coverage statistic. According to the NFL's Next Gen Stats, Surtain allowed the fewest total yards, fewest yards per coverage snap and lowest target rate of any cornerback with at least 400 coverage snaps in 2024.

Surtain was previously named to the Pro Bowl and earned both Associated Press and NFLPA Players' first-team All-Pro honors. He was also named to the Pro Football Writers of America's All-NFL team on Monday.
