Broncos Notebook: Denver set to embrace 'electrifying' environment in Week 13 'Monday Night Football' matchup

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — For rookie quarterback Bo Nix, every game feels like a prime-time game.

"In our shoes, every time we touch the field, it feels like prime time," Nix said Friday. "[Because] for all we know, nothing else is going on. We're just right there in the moment, we're right there in the game."

But while Nix noted that every game is special and should not be taken for granted, he also said this week's "Monday Night Football" matchup with the Browns will present a unique opportunity to continue to compete with the league's best on the sport's biggest stage.

"These are awesome [games], and [they are] why you play this sport," Nix said. "This is why you play the game and what you dream about for the NFL. Every week, you feel like you're playing one of the top guys. It's just how good the league is and how supreme the talent is. All we can do is worry about ourselves. We just need to focus and execute."

Nix said it will be important to focus on the details and "go back to the basics" on Monday as Denver prepares to compete against standout players like defensive end Myles Garrett, whose 10 sacks this season are tied for the third most in the league alongside Broncos outside linebacker Nik Bonitto.

And while Nix looks forward to embracing the second prime-time matchup of his young career, even veteran players like wide receiver Courtland Sutton emphasized the significance of the opportunity the Broncos will have in Week 13.

"Man, I'm looking forward to it," Sutton said of the prime-time game. "As a young guy, I didn't understand. I thought that everybody just got [to play on] Monday night, Sunday night ... these night games. And then I started realizing that they want to see the teams that are having success. It's nice to be able to be in the position that we're in right now, battling to continue to keep moving up in the playoff rankings and to be able to showcase [our team to] the world."

Sutton said that while football fans and other individuals across the league see numbers and statics throughout the season, playing on the national stage affords everyone the valuable opportunity to actually see the team in action — and the team is eager to embrace the exposure.

"I think it's going to be exciting to see the contributions from every single person, whether it's offense, defense or special teams," Sutton said. "As a unit, as a whole locker room and as a team right now, we're playing really good football. It's going to be fun to be able to go out and showcase what we've been doing and continue to add to it. Continuing to ascend, continuing to progress in the right direction. I'm looking forward to being able to play on Monday night, for sure."

Denver's defense — which has posted impressive numbers all season — will look to take advantage of this exposure. Entering Week 13, the Broncos' defense leads the league in sacks (44) and ranks third in yards allowed per game (296.0), and cornerback Pat Surtain II looks forward to putting that dominance on display in what he anticipates will be an "electrifying" environment.

"I'm very amped up," Surtain said. "I can't wait. I know it's going to be electrifying out there in front of the Broncos' fan base. 'Monday Night Football,' I don't think it can get any better than that."

Defensive Coordinator Vance Joseph — who noted that the team's goal is to play its best football no matter what day of the week it is — said it will be especially important not only for the world to see what the team is made of, but for the players to experience the unique environment.

"I think it's always special to play on Monday night," Joseph said. "Everyone's watching. We have a good young team here. Some folks haven't seen us play. They've heard. I think for players, it's always special to play on 'Monday Night Football.'"

And while Nix and the Broncos plan to approach this game the same way they would any other, the national stage could provide some extra motivation heading into the matchup.

"Playing in the NFL is a special opportunity," Nix said. "So, each time you get to do it, you just want to maximize it [and] make the most of it. And this time, the lights happen to be a little [brighter] and the sun is going to be down."

QB BO NIX MAINTAINS FOCUS AHEAD OF WEEK 13 MATCHUP

As Nix continues to reach career milestones and earn league-wide accolades, his focus has remained on one thing: the next opponent.

"All I can focus on is the next game [and] the next opponent," he said. "[The focus is on] what I can do to win [and] what I can do to help the team win. And right now, it's just executing."

After being named the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Month for October, Nix has continued his strong rookie campaign, earning four additional accolades in the month of November. Nix was named the AFC Offensive Player of the Week following an impressive Week 11 performance that featured several career-high marks. He was also voted the NFL's Rookie of the Week in Weeks 10, 11 and 12, becoming the first Broncos player to earn the award in three consecutive weeks and the first Broncos quarterback to earn the award three times.

And while the milestones have certainly showcased the development and growth of Nix throughout his rookie campaign, the way he has approached his preparation for each week has not changed.

"It's all the same," Offensive Coordinator Joe Lombardi said of Nix's mindset each week. "Those [accolades] are nice, but I don't think he pays a whole lot of attention to it. He has his hands full getting ready for the next game. Not a lot of looking backwards, kicking your heels up and enjoying the accolades. It's another challenge in front of us. He's been good. Whether it's been a tough week or a good week, he's on to the next game and getting ready to go. He's been a real pro that way."

Nix and the Broncos have emphasized the importance of maintaining a game-by-game mentality throughout the season, and as the team now looks ahead to an important Week 13 matchup, Nix said his focus has not wavered despite the outside noise.

"There's always going to be the off-the-field things, and it doesn't matter if you don't play well," Nix said. "So, all I'm concerned about right now is the next opponent, and that's Cleveland. We've just got to play well and continue to do the things that we've been doing the past couple weeks leading up to this game."
