ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — In a 17-game season, there are plenty of opportunities to bounce back.
And as the Broncos head into a Week 10 matchup with an unbeaten divisional rival, the team will look to take advantage of an important chance.
"Obviously, last week didn't go as planned," cornerback Riley Moss said Wednesday. "But that's the best thing about the NFL. We have 17 games to be able to prove who we are."
After dropping their first game on the road since Week 1, the Broncos are set for another challenge on Sunday as the team heads to Kansas City to take on the Chiefs in what will be their second consecutive road matchup with an AFC opponent. And as the team looks forward to what may be one of their toughest challenges of the season to date, wide receiver Courtland Sutton believes that in order to find success this weekend, it will be important for the Broncos to put Sunday's loss to bed.
"We're going into another hostile environment this weekend, and you can't dwell on it," Sutton said. "… It's something that I'm sure all of us have heard before. If you dwell on it too long, it'll beat you twice. And that's the last thing that we want."
Despite Sunday's loss being a "a hard pill to swallow," Sutton noted there were still plenty of things to learn from the loss that will be beneficial as the team looks to continue to develop and improve this season. For rookie quarterback Bo Nix, recognizing both the bad and the good — and using it to the team's advantage — will be an important part of this progression.
"You've got to take the good things you did at Baltimore, take the things you can learn from, and go into this game and not make the same mistakes over and over," Nix said. "... We're excited, [and] we've got a hungry locker room. And one game, one moment, one loss doesn't define us."
While the game slipped away from Denver in the second half last week, Nix noted that there were opportunities early on that kept the team close. For Nix and right tackle Mike McGlinchey, this is a testament to the potential of a team that still has plenty of time to learn and grow this season.
"Offensively, I thought there were opportunities there that are all over the tape that we just didn't get to take advantage of early enough," McGlinchey said. "... There are opportunities early in that game to be able to keep pace, and that's positive."
Also positive, for Head Coach Sean Payton, is the opportunity a loss like this provides for a team when it comes to developing grit and resilience that are often key in elevating a team to the next level. And as the Broncos take on their next challenge in Week 10, these important qualities will be put to the test.
"There's a little bit of UFC to our league," Payton said. "Each week — I don't care who you're playing — if you're not careful, you can catch one in the chin. But you've got to get back up, and you've got to get back to work. And that gets back to that mental toughness, the grit, all the things that we're looking for, not only in our players, but our coaches and everyone. You get excited to play the next game to hopefully get the taste out of your mouth."
With their sights now set on Kansas City, the Broncos will have the opportunity to do just that.
"It's just getting back to work," outside linebacker Jonathon Cooper said. "Knowing that the things that we've done have been good enough to this point, it's just cleaning up the little, small things. That's going to happen in this league. You're going to get punched in your mouth every now and then, but it's [about] how you respond to it. I feel like our team definitely has a good mindset to show that our response will be strong and solid. I have full confidence moving forward."
