ENGLEWOOD, Colo. --For a full round -- and most of another -- Indiana wide receiver Cody Latimer sat in Radio City Music Hall.
And waited.
"It wasn't really nerve-racking. It was actually more just tiring," Latimer recalled. "The first night I went home and crashed. We went out to eat after the first night I didn't get chosen; I fell asleep at the restaurant I was so tired. It's more tiring than anything. There's a little frustration. It's like, ah, OK, but I eventually was going to get drafted. I was just happy about that, to be in that position."
When he came back for day two of the draft, he decided on a wardrobe change.
"I wanted to be comfortable in that green room because I had been sweating bullets in that suit," he said. "So I said I'm just going to be comfortable, casual, still look the part, still look nice."
Finally, at pick No. 56 -- a selection the Broncos traded with San Francisco to aquire to make sure they got their man -- Latimer got the call from Denver. It closed a two-day saga the receiver could only describe as "very long."
"But, you know, like I've been saying, it was worth the wait," he said. "Everything happens for a reason, you know? I sat around in the green room for a while and like I said, it was worth the wait. I was just excited to get that call and I'm here. I barely got any sleep last night, I was so excited. It's a great program to be a part of."
NFL Network lead host Rich Eisen recognized that fact as Latimer was hugging his family and friends in the green room before heading to the stage to join NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and Broncos Ring of Famer Gene Mingo, who announced the pick.
"Now I know it was a long wait," Eisen said, "but to be selected and say you're going to go play with Peyton Manning for John Elway and the AFC champion Denver Broncos, that's what's called worth the wait."
