Stewart nabs an interception
As the Chiefs threatened to go up 21-0 in the first quarter and put the game essentially out of reach, the Broncos benefitted from a Kansas City mistake. Wide receiver Tyreek Hill, who is usually a threat with his legs, tried to put points on the board with his arm. Hill, though, made a pivotal error as he threw the ball right to Darian Stewart. The Broncos' safety was, to be fair, wide open, and he reeled in the catch to limit the damage. Denver then drove down the field and kicked a field goal to score its first points of the night.
Sack Barrett makes a play
With less than two minutes remaining in the first half, Kansas City looked ready to add points to its 17-3 lead. But on first-and-10 from the Denver 33-yard line, Shaquil Barrett made sure that didn't happen. After the media's attention revolved all week around Shane Ray's return, Barrett provided a reminder that he remains a key part of this Broncos defense. Barrett ripped around the edge and knocked the ball out of Alex Smith's hands. Domata Peko Sr. recovered the ball, and with it, salvaged the Broncos' chances heading into the second half. The play also represented the first time this season that the Broncos recovered a fumble.
Booker finds the end zone
When the Broncos absolutely had to have a score to stay competitive in Monday's game, they found a way to get one. The 10-play, 80-yard drive featured several highlights, including a 29-yard Bennie Fowler III catch and run, a third-and-10 conversion to Cody Latimer and a defensive pass interference call that moved the ball to the Kansas City 9-yard line. But the play that capped off the long-awaited touchdown drive was a 6-yard Devontae Booker touchdown scamper. It was the second-year back's first touchdown of the season, and it moved the Broncos to within seven points of the Chiefs.
Closer and closer
Trevor Siemian's third interception of the game put the Broncos in a bad spot late in the fourth quarter, but he drove Denver down the field and threw an 11-yard touchdown to A.J. Derby to cut the Kansas City lead to 10. The Broncos missed on the ensuing two-point conversion, though, which ended any chance of a last-minute comeback. After a failed onside kick attempt, the Chiefs ran the clock out to drop the Broncos to 3-4 with a 29-19 win.
