Broncos, Briefly: Thursday, Jan. 17, 2019

Priority No. 1:Get a plan at quarterback. Starter Case Keenum is coming off a season with some highlights and some erratic play, and he has just one year left on his contract. The Broncos also have zero quarterbacks on their roster or practice squad whom they have drafted. It likely has them considering both diving into free agency and using one of their first two draft picks on a signal-caller, even if they initially keep Keenum through the start of the offseason program. They also need to find some continuity on offense given that the latest coaching change means they will open the offseason with their fourth offensive coordinator in four years.

On that Nov. 20 Sunday afternoon at the Superdome, the Saints, including defensive assistant Vic Fangio, shut down John Elway and shut out the Broncos, 42-0.

Free agency is drawing near. On Feb. 3, the NFL's waiver system opens and teams can begin the process that leads into the opening of the 2019 free-agent market. Many of the best players with expiring contracts will re-sign with their current teams or be protected by the franchise/transition tags before the negotiating period opens March 11, and then free agency hits on March 13.

An offensive coordinator at five different colleges, Scangarello, 46, has only four years of NFL coaching experience. But Fangio and the Broncos were clearly impressed by Scangarello's work with the 49ers' rotating cast of quarterbacks and his overall offensive vision.

So, find the new guy with the call sheet in his hand and determine what you're going to be on offense. Many defensive coaches have said the Broncos' plan on offense didn't match their personnel, especially in terms of the struggles to move the ball as well as protect the quarterback when they opened up the formation.
