ENGLEWOOD, Colo. --The most recent addition to the Broncos coaching staff is Defensive Quality Control Coach Cory Undlin, who was hired on May 22, 2012.
Undlin is no stranger to the Broncos defense however, as he spent the past three years working as a defensive coach under Broncos Defensive Coordinator Jack Del Rio in Jacksonville.
Del Rio, who was the head coach of the Jaguars, hired Undlin as a defensive assistant in 2009 and then promoted him to defensive backs coach in 2010.
Undlin, who has also coached with the Browns and Patriots, will enter his ninth NFL season in 2012. He recently sat down with DenverBroncos.com to talk about his experience working with Del Rio, his role on the Broncos coaching staff and the Super Bowl run he enjoyed with the Patriots in 2004.
Can you take us through some of your job duties as a defensive quality control coach?
"First of all, I assist Jay (Rodgers) with the defensive line, and then there is some stuff that goes on with getting the information off the tape, assisting Defensive Coordinator Jack Del Rio with whatever stuff he needs practice-wise and whatever other things that Jack needs on the defensive side."
What is your relationship like with Defensive Coordinator Jack Del Rio, who you worked for in Jacksonville?
"I coached the defensive backs for him in Jacksonville. It's very solid. I like coaching for him, and that's why I'm here. I was out, he knew I was out, and he called. Obviously I know the defense. I know how he operates, which is good for him and good for me, because there's familiarity there. I know what he wants and how he wants it done and all that.
Did your experience working with Del Rio help you hit the ground running here in Denver?"Some of the stuff is a little bit different, so there's been a little bit of a learning curve, there's things that I didn't know that I know now. But, I showed up on Monday morning at 7 a.m. and I was on the grass coaching the defensive line with Jay at 10 a.m. It was pretty crazy."
Why are you helping out with the defensive line in Denver as opposed to defensive backs, where you worked earlier in your NFL coaching career?
"My first year in Jacksonville, I worked the defensive line there too. It's just what they told me I was going to do. They called and said, 'Hey, listen, you're going to coach the defensive line.' There was no bargaining. I've coached defensive backs for 14 years. We will see what happens. That's my area that I've coached for the longest time."
What was it like going on a Super Bowl run with the Patriots in 2004?
"Winning a ring with the Patriots was pretty special. We won the first nine - 22 straight going back to the season before. We ended up losing to Miami at the end of the season. We got into the playoffs, played Indy at home. We were not favored to win, we held Peyton (Manning) to 3, we won 20-3, and that was huge. Wr went to Pittsburgh, hammered them, and it was awesome. Great experience, great locker room, unbelievable roster, star-studded cast, but great guys, all professionals."
