ENGLEWOOD, Colo. – **With free agency set to begin with the start of the new league year at 2 p.m. MDT the NFL has announced that the 2014 salary cap will jump to $133 million.
That's approximately a $10 million increase from the 2013 figure, and nearly $14 million increase from the 2012 cap.
The salary cap is based on a percentage of the league's revenue and the final figure comes from a negotiation between the NFL and the NFL Players Association. "With free agency, we're always trying to get ourselves in a position where when we go into the draft—we don't have a glaring weakness where we are reaching for somebody in the draft," Executive Vice President of Football Operations/General Manager John Elway said at the 2014 NFL Combine. "So I think it's important for free agency, in my opinion, to try to pick up the places where you think you have glaring holes and fill those holes and then when you go to the draft be able to draft the best players that you hope are going to have great careers in the NFL."
