Five Key Matchups: vs. Chargers
There are plenty big individual matchups between the Broncos and Chargers, but these five caught our eyes.
Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers has led the way for San Diego with their running game struggling to get going. Unfortunately, he lost his biggest target for the season with WR Keenan Allen suffering a lacerated kidney. The Chargers have been in the middle of the pack in keeping their quarterback upright, but the offensive line would be able to help him more if they can help the running game take the pressure off of Rivers. Amid their woes, Rivers has thrown 303 yards per game. Miller's ability to bring pressure can get Rivers off his timing to force errant throws or sacks.
With S T.J. Ward injured, David Bruton Jr. steps back into a starting role he occupied in the first week with Ward suspended for the season opener. In this second start, Bruton will be tasked with covering one of the most productive tight ends in recent NFL history. With great route-running and hands, Gates is one of the best targets a quarterback could ask for. On the other side, Bruton is a big hitter who has had a knack forcing turnovers.
A week after the offensive line put together one of its most complete performances yet, Ryan Harris and his teammates will look to continue their progress. Attaochu is the biggest threat to the line, as he's tallied 4.5 sacks and 34 combined tackles.
After a rough outing against the Patriots, Thomas will be eager to bounce back against the Chargers. QB Brock Osweiler has had success going to Thomas, as shown against the Bears, and this could be the week their connection comes back. Verrett has been one of the Chargers' best defenders, and a big play-making threat. He only has one interception, but he returned it 68 yards for a touchdown.
One of the Chargers' weakest points has been their rushing offense, ranking 30th in the league with 81.7 yards per game on the ground. The rookie is averaging 3.6 yards per carry, but as San Diego's offensive line has battled through numerous injuries, no favors have been done for Gordon as he tries to find his way in his first year. Trevathan, along with ILB Brandon Marshall, has been a tackling machine and will probably be a big obstacle for Gordon in his efforts to make San Diego's offense more balanced.
