ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The Broncos will be looking to bring some 1977-inspired magic to Empower Field at Mile High in Week 5.
Denver is set to debut its throwback uniforms on Sunday, which pay tribute to the 1977 season that marked the first time in franchise history the Broncos advanced to the Super Bowl.
And as the team takes the field to face their first divisional opponent of the season and debut the throwback uniforms, honoring the history of the organization will be front of mind.
"It's super cool," left tackle Garett Bolles said Wednesday. "We get to bring back the old history of this organization … [and] some of the greatest to ever play in this franchise's history. So being able to throw that back is awesome."
Bolles, who has spent his entire eight-year career in Denver, has had plenty of time to become familiar with the significant history of the franchise. But even for new players, such as rookie quarterback Bo Nix, honoring those that came before is expected to be a special opportunity.
"I think any time you can pay a little tribute to former teams that have come before you and have kind of laid the foundation for the opportunity that you have, I think that's really important," Nix said. "It's fun to wear throwbacks. I think that's always a neat thing that teams are able to do, and ours are pretty cool."
Denver's orange throwback jersey features oversized white numbers with Legacy Blue trim, while the pants feature an orange-and-Legacy-Blue stripe. The helmet includes the fan-favorite "D" logo on a Legacy Blue shell.
Defensive end Zach Allen, who described the uniforms as a "classic look," said the team is "fortunate to be able to play in them" on Sunday.
"I think they're awesome," Allen said. "I definitely agree with the fans, they're a favorite."
Added cornerback Pat Surtain II: "[It's] my favorite uniform combination for sure. … I wish we could wear them more times."
Adding to the significance of the uniform debut will be the celebration of Denver's annual Alumni Weekend, which will include a reunion for the 1977 team. The team will also honor the Pro Football Hall of Fame enshrinement of Randy Gradishar and Broncos Ring of Fame inductions of Steve Foley and Riley Odoms.
"I love the uniform," Head Coach Sean Payton said. "It's what I grew up watching. [With] the players, I don't know if it creates a different energy. More importantly, the timing is good for the players that we're honoring [during Alumni Weekend] that they wore that uniform."
And while the Broncos look forward to sporting the classic look on Sunday, wide receiver Courtland Sutton stressed the importance of honoring the 1977 Orange Crush era in the best way possible — with a strong on-field performance.
"I think the thing that's going to be even more exciting and [is] going to make the moment even more [fulfilling] is we go out there and get a win, a divisional win at that," Sutton said. "That's going to make it even just more special of a moment. Bringing the throwbacks back, but to get a win, a divisional win at home in them — I think that, that moment's going to be very satisfying."
