Manning-Welker Connection Displayed in Loss

**

SEATTLE – **After playing just one series together in the preseason opener, Broncos fans got their first extended look at two of the franchise's biggest free-agent signings in its history in Peyton Manning and Wes Welker.

Against the Seahawks, Welker caught three passes for 31 yards and one touchdown, all in the first quarter. Welker left the game after that touchdown catch with what Head Coach John Fox called a sprained right ankle.

"Any time you can get a few plays in and get a few catches, kind of get moving around and in a groove, in the feel of the offense and things like that, it's a good deal," Welker said. "Unfortunately it's not really what we're looking for from a team perspective. There's a lot of stuff we need to work on and get better at. But we'll get there."

Although the pair have connected plenty of times on the Dove Valley practice fields, Saturday was the first opportunity for the quarterback and receiver to test their communication against a real opponent.

All three passes that Manning threw to Welker went for completions.

"It was good to hit him on a couple of routes today," Manning said. "We had a blitz read where he and I were on the same page on a communication. And then hit him on a play down in the red zone that he's scored a lot of touchdowns on in his career. Those were all positive."
