ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Entering the 2013 NFL Draft, many saw defensive line, running back and cornerback as potential target positions for the Broncos.
In the first two days of the event, that's exactly what Denver addressed.
With the 90th overall pick of the draft, the Broncos selected South Florida cornerback Kayvon Webster.
"He has excellent cover skills and speed, which you need in this league," Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway tweeted.
The 5-foot-10, 195-pound cornerback showed his speed at the NFL Scouting Combine, when he tied for seventh among cornerbacks with a 4.41 40-yard dash.
"Corner was a position we wanted to address; of course we staged that through the whole draft," Head Coach John Fox said. "We were happy he got to us. We had some trade options to go up or down. We were very pleased he was there. He's 5'10" and-a-half, 195 (pounds), he's got great short quickness. Probably one of the fastest corners in the draft—he ran a sub 4.4. We felt good about his upside and what evidence he put on tape."
In his career, he accumulated 190 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, three interceptions, 15 pass breakups, four forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.
He started 32 of his 49 games with the Bulls, including six starts as a true freshman, and was invited to the East-West Shrine Game leading up to the draft.
"He's tough, he'll stick his nose in there on run support," Elway said.
He led the team in tackles as a senior and was a second-team All-Big East player as a junior.
"Kayvon is a fast and explosive player who had great production during his career at South Florida," Fox said. "He was one of the faster cornerbacks in the draft with sub-4.4 speed, and he will be a great addition to our team."
