DENVER — The Broncos are on the doorstep of the postseason.
With a 31-13 win over the Colts, Denver is now one win away from clinching the franchise's first postseason berth since winning Super Bowl 50. The Broncos' win — coupled with a Miami loss earlier Sunday — has pushed their playoff odds to 94 percent, according to the New York Times.
That doesn't mean it was easy for the Broncos to get to their ninth win and secure their first winning season since 2016.
The Broncos trailed by six points at halftime and by a field goal heading into the final frame, but they recorded four second-half takeaways and notched a 21-point fourth quarter — which included a 50-yard Nik Bonitto touchdown — to pull away.
Spurred by a Jonathan Taylor fumble at the goal line and a 61-yard Marvin Mims Jr. punt return that set up a go-ahead touchdown, the Broncos found a way to rally for a critical win.
As the Broncos head into a short week with a chance to clinch a playoff berth in Los Angeles, these were the players and plays that made the difference:
GAME-CHANGING MOMENT
After Bo Nix was intercepted on the Broncos' first drive of the second half, Indianapolis nearly put the game out of reach. With the Colts leading 13-7, Jonathan Taylor took off down the right sideline for a 41-yard touchdown run. At least, that's how it was scored for a moment. After a booth review, the officials ruled that Taylor dropped the ball before crossing the goal line, which wiped the touchdown off the board. Instead of a 20-7 Colts lead, the Broncos remained within six points. Though they would not take the lead until the fourth quarter, that moment gave the Broncos the break they needed to hang around in the game.
DEFINING STATISTIC
5.
The Broncos recorded five takeaways — including Taylor's ill-timed drop of the football at the goal line — to stifle Indianapolis' offense. Four of those Colts turnovers came in the second half, and Denver also forced a pair of turnovers on downs after halftime. The Colts did not score in the second half as Denver roared back and Anthony Richardson struggled.
MEMORABLE HIGHLIGHT
With the Broncos holding a four-point lead, Bonitto put the game out of reach. Anthony Richardson tossed the ball out wide to Adonai Mitchell, who then tried to lateral it back across the field to Richardson. Bonitto, though, had other plans. With a full head of steam, he plucked the ball out of the air and raced 50 yards for a touchdown. Bonitto has now recorded defensive touchdowns in back-to-back games, and he turned the game into a rout.
BOX-SCORE STANDOUTS
Nik Bonitto became just the second Broncos defender in franchise history to record a defensive touchdown in back-to-back games, joining Ring of Famer Billy Thompson.
Marvin Mims Jr. averaged more than 30 yards per punt return, including a 61-yarder in the fourth quarter to help set up the Broncos' go-ahead touchdown.
Pat Surtain II recorded a pair of passes defensed and an interception, matching his career high in picks for a season.
