Cover 4: Broncos' defense dials up pressure in 10-9 win over Jets

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — The Broncos are headed home with another win.

The Broncos responded from a scoreless first half to earn a 10-9 victory over the Jets in a back-and-forth fourth quarter at MetLife Stadium.

Jets kicker Greg Zuerlein missed a 50-yard field goal with 51 seconds to play, and the Broncos held on for the wild victory.

After an 0-2 start, the Broncos have now stacked two consecutive wins sandwiched around a week-long stay at The Greenbrier.

In a defensive battle on a rain-soaked day, the Broncos' defense held strong against Aaron Rodgers and the Jets' offense, allowing just three field goals and not giving up a touchdown. Denver's offense, meanwhile, rebounded in the second half to score just enough to earn the win.

These were the players and plays that made the difference in the Broncos' Week 4 win over the New York Jets.

GAME-CHANGING MOMENT

Bo Nix's third-down completion to Courtland Sutton to kick-start Denver's first touchdown drive of the game was a key moment, but a series of plays early in the second quarter may have made even more of an impact. After Riley Moss was called for a pass-interference penalty on a third-and-11 near the end of the first quarter, the Jets took over at the Denver 1-yard line with a chance to take a 7-0 lead. Instead, the Broncos' defense stood strong and made three consecutive stops from a yard out. Then, on fourth down with the Jets lined up to go for it, a false start forced New York's field-goal team onto the field. As the Broncos' offense struggled in the first half, that stop allowed Denver to remain in the game. The Broncos would trail by just six points at halftime, which kept them in striking distance. A touchdown in that situation and a double-digit deficit at halftime may have changed the outcome of the game.

Of course, the Broncos' late defensive stands were also critical in securing Sunday's win.

DEFINING STATISTIC

A week after notching seven sacks of Baker Mayfield, Denver put constant pressure on Rodgers and recorded five quarterback sacks. With their pressure, the Broncos held the Jets out of the end zone and limited New York to 4-of-17 on third down. Rodgers had not been sacked four times since Week 15 of 2020.

MEMORABLE HIGHLIGHT

After a difficult first half, Nix rebounded with a critical touchdown drive in the third quarter. Following the aforementioned 29-yard completion to Sutton, the Broncos moved the ball all the way to the New York 8-yard line. On third-and-7, Nix found a wide-open Sutton for his first career NFL touchdown pass. In the process, Nix also gave the Broncos the lead.

BOX-SCORE STANDOUTS

Running back Javonte Williams carried the ball 16 times for 77 yards, which was his most rushing yards since Week 10 of the 2023 season. His performance keyed a Broncos field-goal drive in the fourth quarter that gave Denver the late lead.

In his first start since 2020, Justin Strnad recorded a sack on the first play from scrimmage and also recorded a quarterback hit and two tackles for loss.

In a matchup with his former team, John Franklin-Myers notched a sack, two quarterback hits and a tackle for loss.
