Broncos Notebook: LT Garett Bolles and Denver's offensive line fueled by consistency

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The last time Garett Bolles enjoyed this kind of consistency, he earned an All-Pro appearance.

Bolles enters the 2024 season with continuity, as he will play under the same head coach and offensive line coach for a second consecutive season for just the second time in his career.

The only other time Bolles returned for Year 2 with the same leadership in those two coaching positions came in 2020, when Bolles posted arguably his best season and was named a second-team All-Pro.

"I feel very comfortable," Bolles said Friday. "I think I played my best ball last time I did this for the second time in the offense in 2020. So, [it's about] just being comfortable with it [and] knowing my assignments and just getting better every day."

As he enters his second season under Head Coach Sean Payton and Offensive Line Coach Zach Strief, both Payton and Bolles believes the tackle's game can still reach new heights.

"I'd say if there's one area that he's working on daily with Zach, it's landmarks in the run game," Payton said. "He's very natural at pass protection, getting to the right pad placement in the run game, whether he's playside or on the backside. I think some of those things are areas that's he's worked quite a bit on."

Added Bolles: "I just have to fix some things in the run game and get comfortable with that, and then the pass game is my cup of tea. I just have to switch those roles and just focus on that. [My goal is to] do what the coaches want me to do and have one of my best seasons ever."

An eighth-year veteran, Bolles feels up to the task. He said he is "the strongest and fastest" he's ever been, and his body and mind both "feel great" entering training camp.

"I'm humbled to get better every single year," Bolles said. "I feel like that's what I've been doing."

Bolles is not the only one that feels his level of play is not indicative of his time spent in the league, as Head Coach Sean Payton has been impressed with what he has seen so far in camp.

"He's a tremendous athlete," Payton said. "You don't feel eight years. Sometimes you feel that with a player, other times you don't. I don't feel that with him."

Payton has been impressed with the offensive line as a whole, and Bolles believes the quick start has been fueled by the consistency of the group and the coaching staff.

Building off early momentum, Bolles looks forward to taking on more responsibility heading into the 2024 season and beyond.

"I love being a Bronco," he said. "I've seen the history that we have and the legends that we have in this organization. I feel like it's my job to continue to build that and continue to create this team that we need to go forward."

As Bolles enters the final year of his contract, he said he hopes to be part of that process for the extended future and finish his career as a Bronco. To make that a potential reality, Bolles knows his focus must be on his play this season.

"I just have to do my job and the rest will take care of itself," Bolles said.

PAT SURTAIN II FOCUSES ON INCREASING BALL PRODUCTION

Already a defensive standout, Pat Surtain II will look to be a disruptive force as training camp progresses.

Payton liked what he saw from Surtain during OTAs and is looking for this performance to continue leading up to the start of the season. Impressed with his leadership on the field so far, Payton is also hoping to see an increase in ball production moving forward.

Surtain, who recorded six interceptions over his first two seasons but just one in 2023, said that he has also been focusing on growing in this area. Surtain still posted 12 pass breakups — just two short of a career high — but hopes to find more takeaways in 2024.

"I think for me when the ball is in the air, it's mine or nobody's," he said. "That's the mindset you've got to have."

Although he feels he has not been targeted very much yet, he plans to take advantage of every opportunity that comes his way throughout training camp.

"When you really don't get targeted that much, it's hard to come by, but when I do, I have to capitalize on the opportunity," Surtain said. "That's something that I can definitely do."

As he focuses on improvement on the field, Surtain also takes pride in embracing his leadership role and plans to continue to do so moving forward.

"Being able to be a leader on this team, it definitely inspires me to grow and grow each and every day."
